5 Tips to Help Avoid Information Overload in the Office

Michael Hemsworth
February 12th, 2013
In the modern age, there is an abundance of different viewpoints and opinions to take into consideration, so having an efficient system in place to help avoid information overload will encourage a healthier work environment. The Internet, coworkers and smartphones are not only essential means to staying up-to-date, but also distracting, so check out these five tips for keeping things in check around the workplace:

1. Schedule breaks: Designated break times won’t just increase employee efficiency, but will help make sure that those who aren’t prone to taking a time-out do so. By changing the pace, a worker will be able to effectively have some time to reflect, regroup and grab a refreshment. Schedule one in the morning and another in the afternoon to help leverage the lunch hour, which will allow the mind to anticipate rest periods instead of powering straight through.

2. Offer refreshments: It might seem commonplace to have a water cooler in the office, but having extra coffee and tea available is even better. Those who need an extra boost with a cup of java will be appreciated. Tea is a fantastic, tranquil caffeine alternative that won’t over-stimulate, but still packs a little punch.

3. Set up a lounge: Break rooms often include uncomfortable seats and an uninviting atmosphere. Setting up a couch in an area that is slightly lower lit will help the mind de-stress and enhance overall company morale.

4. Encourage face-to-face communication: A stressed out employee is an inefficient employee. Opening communication lines to management and encouraging employees to be honest when they feel overworked is the best way to help avoid information overload. Although some might be a bit timid in an environment usually dominated by email communication, the end result will be a stronger work community.

5. Set realistic expectations: Constantly review the consistency of each employee to identify those who aren’t able to reach goals and find out why. Additionally, leverage the workload with tact by making sure to accommodate those who are more thorough, but a bit slower than others.
